Load of bollox as usual!
The main problem is the INA bearing quality :!: as well as the Layshaft repro.

Also EARLY laygears used TORRINGTON closed bearing as seen in the photo..
The open OEM bearing has not been made to my knowledge for 20 years.

This was common to ALL early Triumph 2000, TR4 and repair work done when the case hardening had worn out internally, was to fit the (weaker) torrington press fit bearings, as a repair.
There is also a huge amount of utter rubbish Moss talks about "RACE" TR6 gearboxes.
I frankly don't think they know anything at all about the subject!
I reckon they disguise this "repair method" as "uprating" the gearbox as usual, whereas in fact it's grossly weaker and had quite poor lubrication...

Post TR5 laygear clusters went to the OPEN needle bearing & quality then became optimal.
The main problem is GEAR OIL is not designed to cope with this level of bearing load on standard EP90.
As soon as the oil becomes full of metallic particles and temp hits the border lubrication film point, metal to metal contact occurs.
Nothing can prevent wear, when the oil film breaks down.

They attempted to make some improvement with the STAG dual bearing configuration, but this was only to counter the extra torque produced by the 3L V8 engine.

Also the gearsets varied quite a lot over the years in helix angle etc.
If you study any modern gearbox, you will find the majority are SMALLER than the Triumph one & handle more power, despite the bearings being smaller...
(eg. The Getrag 5 speed which in sport version, has no great problem handling Alpina style power outputs of well over 200bhp).

In conclusion:- the only real solution is using FULL SYNTHETIC gear oil,and keeping the gearbox free and filtered from metallic particle contamination (Has a magnet in the Overdrive for this purpose that gets easily clogged).

These gearboxes are getting very old, repro parts are of inferior quality, and many companies are quite happy to sell this junk to TR6 owners knowing full well they are DEFECTIVE :boese:

(FYI I only use good s/h parts from OEM gearboxes such as Dolomite 16V for this reason)
